Hello – we’re back !!!

Greetings from Get Sutton Cycling, the local group of the London Cycling Campaign in Sutton. It might be a long time, if at all, since you last heard from us but we intend to put that right from now by publishing regular, monthly newsletters. Whilst focusing on cycling issues within the borough, we’re also keen to highlight news beyond its boundaries which we believe merit a mention. You might hear from us more than once a month when, for example, there are ongoing key campaigns and consultations, leading us seamlessly to our first piece of news …

***CONSULTATION***CONSULTATION***

The Council is consulting on the installation of a motorcycle barrier to prevent access to Watercress Park: Watercress Park consultation

Whilst motorcycles undeniably can pose a danger to cyclists, like all other legal users of the park, we’re concerned that the consultation fails to mention pedal cycles, critically important for many people with disabilities who cycle.

Moreover, the effectiveness of barriers in preventing access by mopeds, whilst permitting it by pedal cycles is, at least, highly questionable as illustrated by this video of the barrier on the Wandle Trail at Watermead Lane.

The closing date for the consultation is Monday, 6 March.

News from the Council

At its meeting a couple of months ago, the Environment and Sustainable Transport Committee (ESTC) was presented with a list of various schemes relevant to cycling. You can view the agenda and minutes from this meeting here.

We’ll be commenting – constructively of course! – on them through the borough’s Cycle Forum. Do let us know if you have any observations, thoughts or views so that we can feed them through.

….to somewhere near you! As you’re no doubt aware, the Ultra Low Emission Zone is scheduled to be extended to the whole of Greater London, including Sutton, on 29 August 2023.

As part of the Mayor’s aim for cleaner air for all Londoners, there’s a wide range of deals on offer on various transport options, many of them relating to cycling.

Did you know?

You can submit questions to one of the Council’s Local Committees and you don’t have to be a resident of the local area to do so. It’s an ideal opportunity to raise your concerns on anything relating to cycling (or anything else for that matter!)

So, upcoming Local Committee dates for your diaries:

  • Carshalton and Clockhouse: Tuesday, 7 March 2023
  • South Sutton, Cheam and Belmont: Thursday, 9 March 2023
  • Hackbridge, St Helier and The Wrythe: Thursday, 16 March 2023

In other news

The University of Westminster has recently undertaken research into the effectiveness of Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs) in reducing traffic levels. Among the key findings are:

  • LTNs don’t systematically displace traffic onto boundary roads
  • Traffic on internal roads is generally lower
  • It’s a mixed picture on boundary roads with high variability
  • So, overall there’s plenty of evidence of traffic evaporation

And finally…

Do follow us on Twitter, have a look at our website and email us if there are any cycling issues in the borough on your mind. The more of us there are then the stronger our voice will be. We’d love to hear from you!

Many thanks,

Get Sutton Cycling
